ESSENTIAL ATHENS IN THE AFTERNOON

We begin our journey at Syntagma Square, where we will meet our assistant and walk together towards the Hellenic Parliament building, to  witness the impressive Change of Guard ceremony at 16:00. This traditional ritual, performed by the Evzones in their distinctive uniforms, is a tribute to Greek history and a symbol of national pride.

Following this, we embark on a panoramic tour of Athens, starting with the Athenian Trilogy—the National Library, the University of Athens, and the Academy of Athens. These neoclassical gems were designed in the 19th century and reflect Greece’s commitment to education, knowledge, and culture.

We then drive past the Presidential Residence, home to Greece’s head of state, and the Maximou Mansion, the Prime Minister’s official residence. The guards outside these buildings, dressed similarly to the Evzones, maintain a silent yet imposing presence.

Our next stop is the Panathenaic Stadium, or Kalimármaro, the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and remains a significant landmark for sports and history lovers alike. Here, we will pause to step outside the vehicle and cross the road to take in the magnificent view of this historic venue.

We then make our way to Zappeion, a stunning neoclassical structure within the National Gardens. Built in the late 19th century, the Zappeion hall has hosted key political and cultural events, including moments from the first modern Olympic Games.

Right next to Zappeion stands the Temple of Olympian Zeus, one of the largest temples of the ancient world. Construction began in the 6th century BCE but wasn’t completed until the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s rule in the 2nd century CE. Near the temple, we also admire the Arch of Hadrian, which symbolically separates ancient and Roman Athens.

Our journey concludes at the top of Philopappou Hill, a scenic vantage point offering breathtaking views of the Acropolis and the Athenian skyline. This hill is named after the Roman benefactor Philopappos, whose monument still stands at its peak. From here, our assistant will provide helpful guidance on how to continue exploring the city, whether by heading to the Acropolis entrance, visiting Monastiraki Square, or discovering hidden local spots.
