After meeting in Naples, we will set off comfortably toward the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, located at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. As we leave the modern city behind, the landscape begins to tell a story that transports us nearly 2,000 years into the past.
We will arrive in Herculaneum around 2:30 p.m., where priority access will allow us to enter directly one of the best-preserved Roman towns in the world. Accompanied by a professional archaeologist guide, we will begin a guided walking tour from 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., exploring a city frozen in time after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on October 24th, 79 AD.
As we walk through its remarkably intact streets, we will discover some of its most iconic spaces, including the House of the Deer, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, the Forum Baths, the Gymnasium, and the ancient Forum. Vivid frescoes, intricate mosaics, preserved wooden structures, and everyday objects will help us imagine scenes of daily Roman life. We will also encounter the most moving traces of the tragedy itself, such as the human remains found near the ancient shoreline, silent witnesses to the city’s final moments.
At the end of the visit, we will begin our return journey to Naples, with an estimated arrival at 5:15 p.m., concluding this powerful historical experience.
Greca Tip: While visiting Herculaneum, pay close attention to the preserved wooden elements—doors, beams, and furniture—an extremely rare feature in Roman archaeological sites that makes this place uniquely evocative of life in antiquity.
