General Information of Ephesus

Ephesus is a city located in the far west of Turkey, by the Aegean Sea. It is a jewel of the ancient world. It is a symbol of tradition, of past history and in it you will find multiple signs of culture and religion in all its forms.

In 2015, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. Civilizations that marked the course of humanity were part of its territory: Greeks, Romans, Ionians and Weights. In fact, in this city you can find one of the seven wonders of antiquity, the Temple of Artemis.

Main Attractions of Ephesus, Turkey

The city of Ephesus is magical, because in it you can transport yourself directly to a life of many past centuries. Many of the ancient buildings still retain their essence, some were rebuilt or preserved as best as possible.

Although the towns of the past have razed a good part of the temples and buildings, it is still possible to see many of them or, at least, their ruins.

Among the most important sites of interest, we highlight the Via of the Curetes, the Temple of Domitian, the Library of Celsus, the Great Theater, the Temple of Hadrian, the Via Arcadia.

Getting to Ephesus, Turkey

If you want to know how to get to Ephesus, one of the busiest tourist destinations in Turkey, we will mention the ways to do it in this section. Being a city very well positioned geographically, Ephesus has connections with different parts of the country.

The most advisable thing is to visit the city on a tour, so as not to miss any relevant building. Another way to travel to Ephesus is by public transport, in this case the Izban line, from nearby cities, such as Izmir. You can also take the dolmus (a kind of minibus) that leaves from Selçuk to Ephesus.

In the case of Selçuk, it is less than 1 km away, while Izmir is approximately 5 km away. In the first case, there are tourists who go on foot to the sites of Ephesus.

In turn, it is 450 km from the city of Istanbul, so you can travel from Istanbul to Ephesus as an alternative. The bus transfer from Istanbul to Ephesus takes around 9 hours.

You can also choose to fly from Istanbul to Izmir Airport and then travel by car from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport to the city of Ephesus. This last stretch by car takes 45 minutes.

Entry into Ephesus

Visiting the archaeological sites of Ephesus costs around 150 Turkish Pounds (2022). You can buy the ticket at the entrance of the site or do it online, which is ideal if you visit the ruins during the summer time when the largest number of tourists decide to visit this place.

During Ephesus high season (April to October) the site is open from 8am to 6:30pm. In contrast, in low season (from November to March) it opens its doors between 8:30 and 17:30.

Keep in mind that during the summer it is very hot in the area and there is little shade, so it is advisable to bring a hat, water, sunscreen and sunglasses.
