5 Reasons to Travel to Greece in December

October 17, 2024 4 min read.

Greece is a paradise destination for its well known beaches, villages, summer heat, activities and its well known people; but in case you didn't know, this earthly paradise can surprise you also in winter with snow, clear and fresh air, fireplaces, Christmas lights, the smell of cakes, Christmas festivities and its mild Greek winter that offers wonderful views and walks that will make you feel like you are in a movie or in a dream.

The average temperature is excellent in winter. In Athens, in the month of the lord of the white beard you can get average temperatures between 10 °C. The average minimum is 7 °C, while the maximum is 12 °C. In addition, it rains very little. With an average of only 60 ml, and that, considering that December is the rainiest month.

Here are five reasons why Greece should be your winter vacation destination!

1. You can do everything and at a better price

When we say everything, we mean EVERYTHING! (Except, for obvious reasons, the beach, of course.) The food, the people, the tourist attractions, you'll get history everywhere you go, nightlife in the famous bars and nightclubs of the city without reservations, and yes, at a better price!

You will have hotels to choose from. Remember that Greece prepares very well to host so many tourists in summer that luckily for you, the offers start in December in the best hotels and inns.

2. Visiting Arachova and Delphi

For ski lovers, this is one of the most popular winter destinations in Greece. Located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, its ski center is an attraction for winter sports lovers. If you go with your family, enjoy sliding down the hills, and at the end of your adventure, enjoy the view with a hot drink in the cafes that you will find on the main road of Arachova and stroll through its alleys that will take your breath away.

3. Explore the Christmas markets and go ice skating.

Truly movie-like. Imagine walking through the streets of Greece and finding food stalls everywhere with the smell of hot drinks; workshops to make Christmas decorations and introducing Santa Claus to your family. Christmas markets can be found in different areas of the city such as Syntagma Square or the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Take into account that you can among many other things, ice skating in different areas of the city, you can also enjoy the kurabiedes, traditional pastries made with almonds and coated with powdered sugar that adorn all the festive tables of this time along with melomacarona, delicious sweets made with honey, orange and walnuts.

If you go between December 24 and 31, you will hear the little ones of the house go out in groups and sing the calanda, a kind of Christmas carol or song with which they will receive sweets or small amounts of money.

4. The Acropolis of Athens and the Pantheon for you

An extraordinary monument that lives up to its name (high city, in Greek) can be admired from any point of the city. This incredible infrastructure rises in the heart of Athens from one of its many hills that reach a height of up to 600 meters.

Its history is as fascinating as its structure: according to studies, the Acropolis of Athens was already inhabited between the 4th and 2nd millennia BC, this monument served to define the highest parts of the Greek cities. From this point on, urbanization began to develop.

Originally there were 24 monasteries, of which 13 remain and 6 of them can be visited. They have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO since 1988. Take advantage of the tour with an expert guide and be speechless with the sunset over these natural wonders that we are sure will leave you breathless.

5. Enjoy Peloponnese

The Peloponnese is a peninsula of Greece that is connected to the mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth and the Rio-Antirio Bridge.

This is where the city of Olympia is located - yes! This is where the Olympic Games were born in 776 B.C., held until 393 and again in 1896, giving birth to the modern-day Olympic Games. We know, fascinating! Here you will discover an archaeological area with a stadium and, of course, the Museum of the Ancient Games.

Definitely, from the Greca family we recommend you this wonderful destination to spend your Christmas vacations, enjoy a few days full of adventures with your family and friends!
