A quick trip to Naples, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and Capri
Italy has a lot to offer, and sometimes it is hard to decide where to go once we reach the country of pasta and pizza. To simplify things, in this blog we will do a review of three of the top destinations of Italy: Naples, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.
We recommend you give the entire region at least three days to explore it. Naples will need your attention for at least one day, then give a day to explore the magnificent Amalfi Coast, and another day between the towns of Pompeii and Sorrento. You can extend your stay and head to Capri and visit some other Greek and Roman ruins and temples such as Paestum, Vesuvius or Herculaneum.
Let’s start with the third-biggest Italian city, Naples, that drags centuries of history and architecture. This city is well known for being the home place of the world-famous pizza. Naples is overloaded with beautiful churches, and the main cathedral is the Duomo di San Gennaro. In the afternoon, as temperatures soared, street life in Naples slowed and many attractions were closed, but the city comes back to life in the early evening.
This living medieval city is its own best sight, noting that Naples has the most intact ancient Roman street plan anywhere. Part of the importance of Naples is because twenty-five hundred years ago, the city was a thriving Greek commercial center. Today, Naples is southern Italy’s leading city, with a rich story and a great collection of museums, churches and beautiful architecture.
Nestled on a ledge between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, Sorrento is an attractive holiday destination of 20,000 inhabitants, and in summer it also attracts a lot of tourists. Its location is great for local sightseeing and a great place to stay and take a walk. Sorrentino goes to great lengths to create a completely safe and relaxing place for tourists to spend. Something good for tourists: everyone seems to speak fluent English there.
Last but not least, and dotted with lemon and olive groves, the Amalfi Coast has a beautiful old town, with many shopping streets, a spectacular cliffside setting and easy access to public transport. The Amalfi Coast offers one of the best landscapes in the world, which you will appreciate clearly by a simple coastal road trip from Sorrento to Salerno, that will leave your mouth open and your film exposed. You will definitely gain respect for the Italian engineer who built the road, it is simply insane!
The Amalfi Coast is filled with great hotels and villas, and beautiful sandy bays tease from afar and out of reach. Focused on scenery and sandy beaches, the town of Positano is located between the towns of Sorrento and Amalfi, on the most spectacular stretch of the coast. Positano is a delightful gathering place for clothing stores and cafes, and a nice beach.
If you decide to go to Capri, you will find not only a world-class shopping destination but a lot of natural beauty and remarkable cuisine. You can reach here by a quick boat ride from Sorrento. Capri is a destination for many celebrities, who anchor their yachts in the popular Marina Grande. Also, the main attractions of the island are the Blue Grotto, the interesting Roman ruins, and an interesting 14th-century Carthusian monastery.
Pompeii is a vast archeological site near Naples. It is famous for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, where more than 30 feet of hot mud burned the city of Pompeii and destroyed buildings, and the whole city was buried beneath a blanket of ash.
For centuries, Pompeii slept beneath the ash, preserving the remaining areas of the city. Around 1,700, explorers discovered the sophisticated Greco-Roman city frozen in time. In Pompeii, you will find an impressive forum, an amphitheater, villas, houses and ancient architecture. It feels like time stopped in Pompeii. Inside the ruins, some preserved remains of people sheltering from the eruption and bakeries were found with loaves still in the ovens.
We recommend giving time to each of the cities and towns in Italy, as all of them have their unique charm and magic. However, if you are running out of time, but you want to explore different places during your trip, a short trip to the above cities is perfect.
