Best Things to do in Kefalonia

November 18, 2024 5 min read.

Kefalonia is one of those islands in Greece that you can not miss when visiting the country. This lovely island is the largest in the Ionian group and Greece's sixth largest.

It is an island full of history, culture, and natural beauty. This could be the ideal summer vacation destination because it has everything you need in one place: from churches and museums to arts, music, and literature, Kefalonia is the place to go!

Check out the list of the best things to do in Kefalonia now!

Visit Argostoli, the capital of the island

As you can imagine, Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, is full of interesting things to do. You will find a mountainous town with many interesting natural sites to explore. Argostoli is a village full of squares, restaurants, and coffee shops with beautiful streets, perfect for walking.

In Argostoli, visit the amazing Archaeological Museum of Kefalonia, and appreciate findings from the Mycenaean, Hellenistic, and the Roman period. Also, head to the Melissani cave, northeast of the capital, to discover one of the biggest attractions on the island. Enjoy the Vouti and Avithos beaches, and discover the Catholic Church of St. Nicolai.

Just 2 kilometers from Argostoli, you will find the beautiful Lassi, an area with stunning beaches and many shops to mess around in. This resort-village is a very popular destination, attracting tourists from all around the region looking to enjoy the paradisiac beaches it offers.

Both Argostoli and Lassi can be considered gems in the Ionian. In Argostoli, you can find the largest stone bridge in the world that connects the village with the opposite side of the bay, a perfect place to walk and, if you’re lucky, spot some turtles in the water. These two villages are well known for their delicious food, so don’t miss out on trying the local food they offer in the restaurants in the area, such as the popular strapatsada.

Explore the Paliki Peninsula

The Paliki Peninsula is one of the most beautiful areas of Kefalonia. You can reach it by car or by ferry from Argostoli, and both ways are as interesting as each other. In this area, you will appreciate the interesting flat geology and many vineyards, as well as the dramatic cliffs located on the north of the peninsula. One of the best beach spots in the area is Petani Beach, popular for its crystal clear waters and many bars around the area.

To the southeast, you will find the second-biggest village in Kefalonia, Lixouri, a perfect town with beautiful alleys to explore and grab a coffee in. Also there, you can find the Monastery of Kipoureon. This town was built on the site where the city of Pali used to be, and it had huge importance during antiquity.

If you're looking for more beach ideas, the Xi beach, located 7 kilometers to the south, is ideal. You will appreciate the beautiful and calm water, backed by the white cliffs. Many vineyards are located around the area, so don’t think too much before visiting them. The wines in the area are delicious, and you can taste them while observing their production. You can visit the Sklavos winery and have a taste of authentic Greek wine!

Visit the North of the Island: Myrtos, Assos, and Fiscardo

The interesting thing about Kefalonia is that you can explore the whole island, which offers wonderful beaches and views. Myrtos is an excellent place to enjoy a stunning atmosphere where the beach lies between the feet of two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros

Myrtos is considered one of the most beautiful and dramatic beaches in Greece, and it will impress you with its turquoise waters. It is considered one of the best beaches in the country. You can not miss it!

On the other hand, Assos is a tiny but beautiful village full of life and color. For many visitors, this area is the highlight of their trips to the north of Kefalonia, as you will find a picturesque and modern town located right on the edge of the Ionian.

Through history, the Venetians made a stronghold there, and they built a castle fortress to protect the village and the area from invasions and pirates. As a result, Assos has currently become the main town in the island's north. You can reach the amazing village of Assos by car or by boat, and if you prefer to adventure yourself to reach it by the last one, get prepared to enjoy the fantastic scene that you will appreciate.

Visit the Venetian castle of Assos, which is built at the highest point of the peninsula, and explore the history of the area while enjoying stunning views from above. In Assos, enjoy a day at the beach and explore the village from another point of view by renting a boat.

To end your visit, pass by the pink-alike village of Fiscardo, a beautiful town with unique Venetian architecture that attracts visitors from all over the region. This is the perfect place to practice scuba diving, rent a boat or a kayak, or explore the area using a bike. Fiscardo offers its visitors plenty of options for beach spots, so don’t miss out on the beaches of Zavalata, Foki, Emblisi, Kimilia, or Dafnoudi
